The Band Member’s Role: Preparedness & Participation
As a member, you will have the opportunity and responsibility to shape the future of the group. You know best the nature and amount of effort you need outside of rehearsal to contribute to the group. When everyone contributes the amount of hard work outside of rehearsal that's right for them we can have a lot of fun in rehearsal as a group. Your weekly opportunity to contribute to the success of the group will be shown by your preparedness and participation at each rehearsal. The group can only get better when all members exhibit good habits in preparedness and participation.
Preparedness simply means knowing your music to the best of your ability. Sectionals and/or group practice sessions are great opportunities to improve individual preparation. Preparation also means annotating changes and rehearsal suggestions in your music. Please be sure to bring PENCILS to rehearsals in order to mark your music with the necessary markings. Finally, preparedness means having all instruments in good working order and having all the necessary accessories to make your equipment as functional as possible.
Instruments may be provided to you by COD if needed. This is not guaranteed. If you are borrowing an instrument from COD, it is your responsibility to keep it in good working order while it is in your possession. Repairs costs beyond "wear and tear" that are pre-existing can be arranged to be paid for by COD if a quote for service is obtained first. This is contingent on available funds in the music budget. It is YOUR responsibility to arrange for any repairs necessary.
Participation means attendance and engagement during all rehearsals. The COD Band rehearsal environment encourages a democratic process where members are encouraged to contribute to the betterment of the group through peer critique or sharing musical wisdom with others. This approach also transcends to sectionals, where members should all have an equal voice in the process of making the music better. Finally, participation means weekly attendance by all members. Regardless of how well you know your music, your absence greatly affects the team dynamic of the COD Symphonic Band. Each and every member’s musical contribution is essential to the success of the band as a whole. By participating in the COD Band, you are agreeing to be a part of a team which is dependent on your participation!
A professional ethic suggests that if for any reason you need to miss a rehearsal, it is preferred that you send me an email (not a phone message) at least one day prior to rehearsal. It is the students' responsibility to contact the director in advance (NOT the day of rehearsal). You can write to me at mfleischmann@collegeofthedesert.edu. Professional ethic also suggests that if you do miss, you have a qualified substitute to cover your parts in your place.
Being On Time
Being on time is important. Being on time sends a subtle and powerful message to those around you about your sense of responsibility. It is expected that each student arrives before 6:00pm, and is ready to play at 6:00pm.
Grading
Participation and Preparedness at weekly rehearsals and scheduled performances. Students will practice good habits in participation and preparation as outlined above. Students will submit a self-reflective “exit ticket” on canvas (OR CODBAND.NET) at the end of each rehearsal. Students must be present at rehearsal to receive credit for their exit ticket. The lowest three exit ticket scores will be dropped when determining this portion of your grade.
The COD Band is a performing arts course; therefore, it is required that you participate in the experience of performance. A missed performance will result in at least one letter grade deduction. The success of the band depends on everyone’s consistent participation!
