COD Symphonic Band | Carnegie Hall, New York City | April 1, 2019
Important COVID-19 UPDATE
March 16, 2020
To the Musicians in the COD Band Family:
It is with regret that I must announce the cancellation of all remaining rehearsals and performances for the Spring 2020 term. As we are living in truly unprecedented circumstances, it will be impossible to predict when things can return to normalcy in regards to any future performance opportunities. It has indeed been an honor to direct the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band this term, and to witness the talent and dedication that you bring each and every week. My disappointment with the current cancellations of rehearsals and performances cannot be overstated, as yours have been without a doubt, the most talented groups I have been privileged to work with in my six years at COD. I cannot make any promises at this point, but I am committed to honoring the great work and effort we have put forth in preparing for public performances. It is my hope that we may be able to come together at some point and finish what we started. As you can imagine, it is impossible at this time to predict if or when that day may arrive between now and summer. I will be in communication via REMIND and my COD email (mfleischmann@collegeofthedesert.edu) to arrange for the return of music and instruments in May.
For those of you taking Symphonic Band or Jazz Band for credit, I am working on an alternative assignment that meets the student learning outcomes for each course. The alternative assignment will be a project-based assignment that I will craft with each one of you individually. I do not have any more details at this time as to what that will be. You will receive an email through CANVAS on your mycod email accounts by the end of the week with more details. To be clear, our courses will still continue in an online setting, and you will receive the appropriate course credit by fulfilling the requirements of the alternative assignment. Rest assured, for a one-unit course, you will not be inundated with excessive readings or side work. The assignment will be fair and appropriate for the demands of a one-unit course. Course auditors need not complete this assignment, but are welcome to participate.
Perhaps more importantly, in these uncertain times where fear and trepidation dominate our lives and thoughts, the world needs artists now more than ever. The world needs YOU now more than ever. I am not urging anyone to violate our self-imposed quarantine, or to put yourself (or others) in danger publicly, but it is my hope that you continue your pursuit of music. Continue practicing, continue playing, not only for the fulfillment of your own souls, but for the souls of those close to you. In these uncertain times, humanity needs the arts to be reminded of the beauty that resides in each and every one of us. Be well, be safe, and I look forward to making music with you again when the time comes!
Yours in music,
Michael P. Fleischmann
